How do I obtain a Certificate of Compliance?

Only a qualified electrician with a Wireman’s License (and who is registered with the Department of Labour) can issue a COC.

What is the purpose of an electrical COC?

An Electrical Certificate of Compliance (ECOC) or electrical COC is a legal document that verifies an electrical installation is compliant on the date of inspection with all the legal requirements as stipulated in the Electrical Installations Occupational Health and Safety Act of South Africa.

What is electrical COC for insurance?

A COC is valid for the lifetime of an installation unless alterations have been done, in which case, a supplementary COC must be issued. All COCs must be kept in a safe place as, in the event of a claim, an insurance company may ask to see a valid COC for the insured property.

Can a house be sold without a COC?

Sellers are responsible for providing certificates of compliance (COC), but buyers also need to know what they entail. When you sell a property you need to provide compliance certificates for electrical, gas and electric fence installations not older than 2 years, before the property can be transferred to the new owner.
